The Kingdom of Thailand, the Land of Smiles, is a constitutional monarchy, situated in central of Southeast Asia. On May 11, 1949, an official proclamation changed the name of the country to "Prathet Thai", or "Thailand" by which it has since been known. The word "Thai" means "free" and therefore "Thailand" means "Land of the Free." Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European. The Thai society has traditions based on ancient and deeply held beliefs. Thai population is mostly devout Buddhist. Bangkok, a wonderful, at first glance chaotic, mix of Ancient East & Ultra Modern West , is the capital and by far the largest city. Administratively, the country is divided into 76 provinces.
